Roland Harper had a great season for the Bears in 1978. Unfortunately, he suffered a serious injury in the preseason of 1979 and was never the same again.

Another NFL great from my best years of watching NFL Football, has passed away. Although not a Ram fan, I still enjoyed watching Roman drop back to pass, or scramble if all receivers were covered. Roman was an NFL great, that I hope is in the NFL Hall of Fame. I.remember many Sunday afternoons watching the Rams play, before the disastrous rule changes that would follow in the late 70's and 80's. Under todays NFL rules, there is no telling what a quarterback like Roman Gabriel would have accomplished. Thank you Roman for those years of great football viewing. Even when you were traded to the Eagles, you were still a very competitive and productive quarterback. May you Rest-In-Peace!

The difference in the 49ers execution when Brodie started compared to Spurrier was huge. Brodie was aging and oft-injured in his last few years but when he came in he lifted their performance level significantly. Brodie had a deft touch with longer passes while Spurrier struggled. Spurrier was the supposed heir apparent, the Heisman winner out of Florida who would continue the success Brodie started and lead the Niners well into the 1970’s. Obviously things worked out differently. He left after ‘75 and the Niners struggled until Bill Walsh and Joe Montana arrived in 1979. The USFL gave Steve a chance to shine as a play caller and he went on to achieve a Hall of Fame coaching carrier at his Alma mater.

San Diego hits Cleveland hard with an incredibly balanced passing attack and running game. 330 yards passing, 205 yards rushing, 535 yards total offense. They just absolutely unleash on, unload on, destroy, demolish, and pulverize the Cleveland defense. Cleveland never recovers and their 1981 season is wrecked from the start. They will never regroup from this and will finish only 5-11-0 for the year. Terrible beating suffered.

I played Pop Warner football with his son Robin in 1971. Robin was on my team. Roman never came to one game, not one. Everyone on our team wanted to meet him. That’s when I realized he was like my dad. A deadbeat Dad.

Thanks for posting! Roman was a great QB, and I remember him best when he played for the Rams in the 60's. Maybe also because after pee wee football, I played for the Rams on a VFW sponsored league before HS. We had the exact black helmets with the white horns. They even looked impressive on the B&W TVs of the day!
